ABRASION RESISTANT PIPE AND DUCTWORK

Fiber-Glass-Reinforced plastics (FRP) are used for many varied applications; from boats and bathtubs to missiles.  Examples of industrial and chemical equipment currently fabricated out of fiberglass-reinforced plastics include tanks and vessels, pipe, ducting, hoods, fans, scrubbers, stacks, grating, and specialty fabrications. One of the fastest growing areas is the use of FRP pipe and FRP ductwork for pollution-control equipment.

Perhaps the prime reason for using fiber-glass-reinforced plastics (FRP) is because of their inherent corrosion resistance. In many cases, they are the only materials that will handle a given service environment; and in other cases, their corrosion resistance is combined with their economy to make them the most economical acceptable solution.

Why Fiberglass (FRP) Pipe and Ductwork is Ideal for Abrasive and Corrosive Applications?

The term FRP, which is common throughout the industry, refers to plastic that has been reinforced with glass fibers. Many reinforcements can be used for plastic materials-including polyester fibers, carbon fibers and, of course, glass fibers. For corrosion-resistant equipment, most of the applications normally involve the use of glass fibers.

Numerous projects have been installed where the customers have achieved outstanding fiberglass pipe service life in highly abrasive applications. These applications have included lime slurry, fly ash slurries, and also the extremely abrasive bottom ash service.
